Segmenting & Counting Phonemes- Pizza Toppings

Segmenting & Counting Phonemes
Pizza Toppings

We are working hard in kindergarten to master every standard before the end of the year!

Why not throw a little fun into learning by making pizzas?
My kids absolutely LOVED this phoneme counting activity!

All you need to get started are three things:
  1. Tan & yellow construction paper.
  2. Two color counters
  3. Picture cards

I actually made the pizza mats for each student while we were sitting at the teacher table together. They liked the activity so much, that I laminated them to use again and again.

Start by using simple, two and three phoneme pictures. The students sound out the word, and then place a "pepperoni" on their pizza for each sound they hear.

Build up to segmenting four, five and six phoneme words.  Once the students have placed their "pepperoni" on their pizza, be sure to have them go back and tap out and blend the sounds in the word.

This is the perfect intro activity to use before my Pizza Toppings unit. Once the students understand the concept, this activity can be placed in an independent work station.

There are seven different pizzas with matching topping slices.

I found these cute little pizza boxes at Shakeys to use for storing the pizza slices.

The students name the picture, then tap the sounds out on the correct pizza slice, and place it on top of the picture.

 Look how engaged they are!

When they are finished, I ask them to trade pizzas with a partner and check each other's slices to see if each pizza was built correctly.

There are also five corresponding “Pizza Toppings” worksheets. These are perfect for independent work or assessment! This unit includes 26 pages of FUN with words and sounds!

You can purchase my Pizza Toppings Unit separately, or as part of my larger bundle, Fun With Phonemes.

Fun with Phonemes- Sound Sandwiches

Here's a fun way to practice beginning, middle and ending sound identification.
My students love building "Sound Sandwiches."

This unit is packed with phoneme fun! It's a perfect activity for students to complete during centers as part of an independent work station.

Students sort the sandwich parts by identifying and matching sounds.

There are three sets of sandwich parts organized by by beginning, middle and ending sounds.

Each set makes 5 Sound Sandwiches.

And the best part is that they all can be stored inside a handy sandwich container. I got these cute colored containers at the dollar store!

Includes 6 Print and Go worksheets too!

This unit is part of my larger Phonemic Awareness Bundle- Fun with Phonemes!

Cook up some fun with six fun-filled, hand-on phonemic awareness activities!

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics in Just 5 Minutes a Day

Whether you teach half day or full day kindergarten, finding a way to fit it all in is a daily struggle. For me, the challenge is creating a balanced literacy approach for thirty-two little ones in a three hour and twenty minute daily schedule. Every minute of  the day is precious.

Over the years, I have developed numerous tools to help me streamline my day. My Daily Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Skills PowerPoints are one tool I use to help my students master the high expectations of the Common Core Standards. I use these daily as a phonemic awareness warm-up and a review of kindergarten phonics skills. Studies have found that young children benefit the most from short instructional sessions in phonemic awareness. These weekly PowerPoints are 5 - 7 mins long and packed with interactive fun!

There are four Mega Packs which cover an entire year of phonemic awareness and phonics skills.

The skills covered follow the Common Core State Standards and get progressively more difficult each week. The power points are fully automated and interactive. My kids love them! I know yours will too.

Here are a few of the fabulous feedback comments I have received...

A Buyer said:
"My students love these PowerPoints. The cheered when I said we will do it again tomorrow! I love when something so simple is so effective and enjoyed. Thanks!"

Connie J. said:
"Fabulous daily phonics practice - in just a few minutes per day. Can't wait to use!!"

Thanh N. said:
"These are just AMAZING!!! Found out about them at another school when I went to observe a teacher :-) and she told me it's a must have for my Kinder! My students LOVE the Daily Phonemic Awareness PPT. They would get on to me when we don't do it!!! Thank you!"
Carolyn H. said:
"I recommend your daily practice to every kindergarten and first grade teacher I meet in professional development. I was introduced to your daily phonemic awareness in a class on the Five Components of Reading. Great tool!"

FREEBIES!

I am offering two FREEBIE sample PowerPoints of Weeks #1 and #9 so you can see the progression of skills covered. Enjoy!

Poppin' Up Some Phoneme Fun!

Poppin' Up Some Phoneme Fun!

Here is a great way to practice phoneme identification skills with your students.

The student chooses a popcorn piece and decides if the two pictures share the same beginning, middle or ending sound.

The student then places the piece on the correct popcorn box.

Here my students are working on discrimination beginning and ending sounds. We'll add middle sounds later on in the year.

There are also three corresponding "popcorn" worksheets. These are perfect for independent work or assessment!

Popcorn Sound Match is part of my larger Hands-On Phonemic Awareness Pack- "Fun with Phonemes"
